What did Reid say about crashed UFOs?

The New York Times, for the most part, is good about correcting things. Sometimes even the most arcane minutiae, things almost no one would notice or care about, are corrected in the Times.

What we\\u2019re getting to today is the story from Friday: \\u201cNo longer in shadows, Pentagon\\u2019s UFO unit will make some findings public.\\u201d

It contained a doozy of a correction.

Just from the headline alone, it sounds like a huge story. Haven\\u2019t people been debating whether we\\u2019ve been visited by spacecraft from beyond this world for decades?

What?! It\\u2019s all true? Roswell?

But a correction on the Times website quickly followed:

\\u201cAn earlier version of this article inaccurately rendered remarks attributed to Harry Reid, the retired Senate majority leader from Nevada. Mr. Reid said he believed that crashes of objects of unknown origin may have occurred and that retrieved materials should be studied; he did not say that crashes had occurred and that retrieved materials had been studied secretly for decades.\\u201d

Well, that\\u2019s a horse of a different color, isn\\u2019t it? \\u201cMay have occurred\\u201d and \\u201cshould be studied\\u201d carry quite different meanings than \\u201chad occurred\\u201d and \\u201chad been studied.\\u201d

It\\u2019s still a big story; that the Pentagon is finally opening up its UFO files, at least a bit. But not as big as the idea that they know UFOs crashed here and we\\u2019ve been studying them for decades.

Near the end of his 2019 autobiography, Bob Lazar writes, \\u201cI\\u2019m no kind of hero.\\u201d

With each passing day, that seems less true. I know what you\\u2019re thinking: Is this idiot really devoting a column to a controversial UFO whistleblower during a global pandemic? Should I stop reading this tinfoil claptrap right now and spend the next few minutes on something more productive?

I know. It\\u2019s nuts. If you ever watched \\u201cThe X-Files,\\u201d the U.S. government has basically done a 180 on UFOs. For nearly a century, intel gathering under clandestine programs \\u2014 Project Mogul, Project Sign, Project Grudge, Project Blue Book, Project Ozma \\u2014 had one guiding principle: blanket denial.

The stated goal was to investigate UFO sightings. The outcome was official excuses.

UFOs were weather balloons or street lamps or migrating birds. They were illusions refracted by the natural world. They were fantasies of deranged imaginations. They were not real.

All of that has changed dramatically, starting with a 2017 New York Times blockbuster that revealed the existence of the U.S. government\\u2019s Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program, created a decade earlier to analyze unexplained phenomena.

So isn\\u2019t it time Bob Lazar got a second hearing in the court of public opinion?

The world owes him an apology.

But if you google Lazar, you get sucked into a black hole that suggests he is a \\u201cfraud,\\u201d \\u201cliar,\\u201d \\u201cconspiracy theorist\\u201d and \\u201cUFO hoaxster.\\u201d What he was saying in 1989 \\u2014 we have recovered crashed alien saucers that defy everything we know about the universe \\u2014 was a stick of dynamite to rational thought. But what he was saying then is now backed up by the official record. Please read Lazar\\u2019s autobiography \\u201cDreamland,\\u201d or watch the Netflix doc \\u201cBob Lazar: Area 51 & Flying Saucers,\\u201d and tell me why you still think he is a deceptive kook. Spoiler alert: You can\\u2019t do it.

Finally, after waiting 30 years, the Government admits to possessing alien craft. Time will tell as to what happens next. Personally, I doubt they will disclose much more - and wouldn\\u2019t be surprised if they issue a \\u2018correction\\u2019 and say their statement was an error. In any case, I never thought I\\u2019d see this day. Thanks so much to all of you that supported me throughout the years. On another note, this is the only social media account I have, no Facebook, Twitter, etc. there are apparently lots of imposters out there.
