b'Rendlesham Forest: UFO \'sighting\' becomes legend like King Arthur

The film Codename Rendlesham looks at the reports by US airmen who claimed to have seen a UFO in Rendlesham Forest, Suffolk, in December 1980.

Theories range from it being an alien visitation to a hoax.

Academic David Clarke said researchers were at an "impasse" and the longer it goes on "the more it becomes a legend".

On 26 December 1980, several United States Air Force (USAF) security personnel stationed at RAF Woodbridge, reported that they investigated "lights" in the surrounding forest.

In 1983, a memo by deputy base commander Lt Col Charles Halt was released by the US government describing an encounter with an apparent UFO.

It made headline news in the UK which has ballooned into an industry of theories covered in books, dramas, documentaries and websites, suggesting it was either an actual alien visitation, a secret military aircraft, a misinterpretation of natural lights or the beam of Orfordness Lighthouse, or a hoax.

Academic researcher into the UFO reports Dr David Clarke, of Sheffield Hallam University, said in the film: "Now it may have been a lighthouse. It may have been some natural phenomena. That is beside the point.

"We\'ve reached an impasse. There are those who can only see it in black and white terms - aliens or people from the future came here.

"Or it\'s the sceptical version - that people are lying or they have been misled by ordinary things. The more it is elaborated on, the more it becomes a legend."

Ian Ridpath, an astronomy writer who believes the sighting can be partly put down to the beam from Orfordness Lighthouse, said: "Some of the witnesses have changed their stories. New bits of information have come out that we hadn\'t heard of.

"Really what we are seeing is the creation of a modern myth, and I don\'t think it will ever die."

The film produced by Chill Factor Films is set to be screened in Woodbridge later in the year.

ALIEN life experts now believe Mercury once possessed the ingredients for life, after re-examining data from US space agency NASA.

Until now, space experts believed Mercury\'s chaotic terrain was created by earthquakes triggered on Mercury following the impact.

Mercury is well known for its brutal cracked and cratered surface and long considered as "completely inhospitable". Now a shocking new theory suggests Mercury "chaotic terrain" may have been formed by volatiles.

In planetary science, volatiles are the group of chemical elements and chemical compounds with low boiling points that are associated with a planet\'s or moon\'s crust or atmosphere. Examples include nitrogen, water, carbon dioxide, ammonia, hydrogen, methane and sulfur dioxide. In astrogeology, these compounds, in their solid state, often comprise large proportions of the crusts of moons and dwarf planets.

These are elements and chemical compounds able to swiftly switch states underneath Mercury\'s surface.

Such volatiles, such as water, are essential for life as we know it to exist.

Consequently, potential presence on Mercury is an exciting development for those hunting for alien life.

The study, led by Planetary Science Institute researcher Dr Alexis Rodriguez, examined Mercury\'s chaotic terrain in closer detail.

Red planet Mars has a similarly chaotic terrain, but the landscape Earth\'s nearest neighbour was likely caused by outflow channels.

With no such channels on Mercury, researchers instead tied the terrain to a powerful asteroid impact which left the Caloris basin, a massive crater still visible on the planet\'s surface.

Until now, space experts believed Mercury\'s chaotic terrain was created by earthquakes triggered on Mercury following the impact.

However, the new study, suggests this was not possible because of the unfeasible time scale.

Co-author Daniel Berman, also of the Planetary Science Institute, said: "A key to the discovery was the finding that the development of the chaotic terrains persisted until approximately 1.8 billion years ago, two billion years after the Caloris basin formed."

This was the "first, kind of, smoking gun," Dr Rodriguez told Space.com.

The researchers were able to date these features using data and images from the NASA MErcury Surface Space ENvironment GEochemistry and Ranging (MESSENGER) spacecraft.

SpaceX\'s hopes a human-occupied Crew Dragon flight this May are fading fast. A parachute test for the capsule failed on March 24th after a helicopter pilot was forced to drop the test vehicle early when it became unstable, threatening the pilot\'s safety. The test machine was destroyed as it hadn\'t reached "target conditions" where the parachutes would be armed, a SpaceX spokesperson told Parabolic Arc.

It\'s not clear what led to the problem, although SpaceX said the parachutes weren\'t responsible.

The crewed demo mission is still officially expected in May. However, Parabolic Arc sources said that the failure along with separate preparation issues made it "likely" that the flight would wait until June. It wouldn\'t be surprising if the COVID-19 pandemic complicated the situation, for that matter.
