Close Encounters Man: How One Man Made the World Believe in UFOs, a new book by Mark O\'Connell, serves as a biography for both the modern UFO phenomenon and for Hynek, an astronomer and professor at Northwestern University who died over 30 years ago, but whose ideas make him one of the most surprising scientific figures of the 20th century.
Hynek was also one of the first scientists to evaluate UFO sightings for the U.S. Air Force, working on a series of classified projects in the 1950s and 1960s. Though he started out a skeptic, he went on to found the J. Allen Hynek Center for UFO Studies, landing a cameo in Steven Spielberg\'s 1977 hit, Close Encounters of the Third Kind after contacting the director when he learned that the film\\u2019s working title was drawn from his work.
Fact: Born a few days before Earth passed through the tail of Halley\'s Comet in 1910, Hynek died just a few months after traveling through the comet\'s wake again in 1986.

A SECRET database filled with UFO incidents reported by airline crews has been kept away from prying eyes thanks to the government.

THE public may never learn of the recent UFO sightings made by pilots in our skies thanks to a piece of EU legislation, it has emerged.
Airline staff report a number of strange sightings to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) every year, it is understood. The Sun reports since the MoD closed its UFO desk in 2009, the CAA has become the last British government organisation to retain an interest in UFOs and keep files on incidents involving civilian aircrews.
But it has decided not to release a dossier detailing sightings or incidents between 2011 and 2017.
Government files of this kind are normally available under the Freedom of Information Act, which allows any member of the public to request files from the government.
But the CAA is now using a piece of European legislation from 2014 to block access to its record of \\u201coccurrences\\u201d
The CAA states: \\u201cOccurrence information can only be used for the purpose of maintaining or improving aviation safety, and the release of occurrence information to the general public or the media, including in response to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, is not permitted.
\\u201cHowever, if you require occurrence information for the purpose of maintaining or improving aviation safety you are able to make an application to the CAA.\\u201d
