Trying to eliminate the SYMPTOM without eliminating the cause of your problem is utter nonsense. If you have a rash and go to your doctor you know that just trying to rub away the rash is foolishness. Your doctor has to find what caused the rash and give you medicine to eliminate the cause. It's the same with weight. Dieting is just trying to make the symptom go away without eliminating the what caused you to weigh so much.
