Episode 12: Motivation and Mind-set Mastery with AJ Roberts

Published: March 14, 2016, 4 p.m.

Wow! What a huge show.

This episode is just full of gems from start to finish.

But I learnt SO much from that one call and I had to get it out there. The biggest point is the last one. I also learnt that “to have one is none, and to have two is one”. Once again, my skype recorder failed without me knowing, but thank god, I had a back-up. Military training does pay off in Civvie Street…

1). Take the chances life gives you

This is how the conversation went at 20.55 this evening

-> “Fancy doing my podcast?” (with a bit more detail)
-> “yeah sure, 10 minutes time?”

My first thought was “there’s no way I can prepare in that little time”. Which is really code for “I’m scared and if I put this off, I might lose this chance and then I won’t have to do the thing my lizard brain finds scary”

It would have been easier to say, “I would love to, but I am just about to eat” or “I’ve been working since 0600 this morning and I’m ruined” or “I would love more time to prepare because I may not do you justice”. But, as per the points below, I said HELL YES.

(luckily), I said yes and crammed in 10 minutes of prep.

2). You don’t need anywhere near as much time as you think.

If I had known about this in advance, I would have put 2 hours minimum of prep into this interview. Given the increase of pressure, I had to work hard.

Your brain has this incredible ability to focus when it needs to. Set yourself ridiculous targets and stick to them.

3). Get outside of your comfort zone.

This came from both the act of recording the podcast, and the content of what the guest said. It was clear from what AJ said that the only way to get change, is to get outside of your comfort zone immediately.

Whether it’s breaking world records or improving a relationship, the key is getting outside of your comfort zone.

4). Delay gratification

You are going to have to go through some shit times before you succeed and you must fail often before you succeed.

5). Live life now

As AJ bought up when I asked him “if you had one message to tell the world, what would it be?” you have this one shot at life and tomorrow you could be dead. How are people going to talk about you at your funeral?

Would you satisfied with how you have lived your life if it ended right this moment?

If you have read this far, please do me the honour of really contemplating that question. You have one chance at this fragile life. Blink, and it’ll be over before you know it. This is not a morbid thought.

“It is not death that a man should fear, but he should fear never beginning to live” – Marcus Aurelius

How are you going to be remembered?

Peace out,

Tom
