Published: June 20, 2017, 9:22 a.m.

In today’s edition of the podcast Wisconsin Strength Coach Erik Helland sits down and discusses training and how it has evolved through his career. We start talking about his time in Chicago and how working with Coach Vermeil has shaped him as a coach. We then talk about the role of player prep vs player monitoring and how they may be working against each other instead of in conjunction with each other. He then shares with us the primary differences and similarities seen working in the NBA and NCAA when it comes to handling basketball players, and how his flexibility with programming has evolved over his career. Next we touch upon how he handles his athlete’s from first stepping on campus to the vets they have at UW from evaluations, to progressions in training, to individualization, and where the ideas and modifications to his evaluations came from and how those drive the program to ensure that quality is the number one driver of training. We finish out discussing the importance of team building and internal leadership by the players to the team and individual athlete’s success, and the importance of the mentors coaches have along the way and how important those relationships are.
