Because God goes before them as they engage their enemies, the Israelites are fast becoming a military legend to the those dwelling in and around Canaan. The people called the Gibeonites also heard how Joshua destroyed both Jericho and Ai.  What could they do to protect themselves from Israel? 

If you can't beat them, join them! They tricked Joshua and the Israelites into making a pact with them. They were able to get away with this, because Joshua and the people in their pride decided NOT to counsel with God about this seemingly "good natured" offer. 

Gibeon also was a great and city. To go up against it with enough strength, five opponent kings aligned themselves and their armies to take it. Now that Israel made a pact with the Gibeonites, they were bound as allies to help defend Gibeon. How Israel gets involved in this and what God does about it may surprise you.
