For they are not all Israel who are of Israel, (7) nor are they all children because they are the seed of Abraham; but, ‘In Isaac your seed shall be called.’ (8) That is, those who are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God; but the children of the promise are counted as the seed. (9) For this is the word of promise, ‘At this time I will come and Sarah shall have a son.’ (10) And not only this, but when Rebecca also had conceived by one man, even by our father Isaac (11) (for the children not yet being born, nor having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works but of Him who calls), (12) it was said to her, ‘The older shall serve the younger.’ (13) As it is written, ‘Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated.’” Rom.9:6-13 (NKJV) “Who has heard such a thing? Who has seen such things? Shall the earth be made to give birth in one day? Or shall a nation be born at once? For as soon as Zion was in labor, she gave birth to her children.” Isa.66:8 THE REJECTION OF CHRIST BY MOST, BUT NOT ALL, IN ISRAEL: 1. did not subvert THE PLAN AND PROMISE OF GOD! “(6) But it is not that the word of God has taken no effect. For they are not all Israel who are of Israel, (7) nor are they all children because they are the seed of Abraham; but, ‘In Isaac your seed shall be called.’”Rom.9:6-7 _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ <><><> “Grace does not run in the blood!” Matthew Henry <><><> 2. high-lighted God’s sovereign choice of ISAAC OVER ISHMAEL! “(7b) but, ‘In Isaac your seed shall be called.’ (8) That is, those who are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God; but the children of the promise are counted as the seed. (9) For this is the word of promise, ‘At this time I will come and Sarah shall have a son.’” Rom.9:7b-9 ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 3. high-lighted God’s sovereign choice of JACOB OVER ESAU! “(10) And not only this, but when Rebecca also had conceived by one man, even by our father Isaac (11) (for the children not yet being born, nor having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works but of Him who calls), (12) it was said to her, ‘The older shall serve the younger.’ (13) As it is written, ‘Jacob I have loved, but, Esau I have hated.’” Rom.9:10-13 “And the LORD said to her: ‘Two nations are in your womb, two peoples shall be separated from your body; one people shall be stronger than the other, and the older shall serve the younger.” Gen.25:23 ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ “`Will I not in that day,’ says the LORD, ‘even destroy the wise men from Edom, and understanding from the mountains of Esau?’” Obadiah 8 ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ “(2) ‘I have loved you,’ says the LORD. Yet you say, ‘In what way have You loved us?’ ‘Was not Esau Jacob’s brother?’ says the LORD. Yet Jacob I have loved; (3) But Esau I have hated, and laid waste his mountains and his heritage for the jackals of the wilderness.” Mal.1:2-3 ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________ “The choice of one deserving man over another deserving man would have been favoritism. When we see that the two (Jacob and Esau) were equally undeserving, the whole picture becomes different. Everything that is said in the entire Bible about the nature of fallen man may be said—must be said, about both Jacob and Esau. God determined, for causes that are to be found in Himself and have not been revealed to us, to show favor to Jacob. This is grace and grace alone. To show grace to one does not imply condemnation of the other. The condemnation had been equally upon both since the fall of Adam. The grace that is now manifested is sovereign.” Donald Grey Barnhouse SO WHAT? 1. God always keeps His promises, so don’t try to understand the future through the eyes of the present! “(10) For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, and do not return there but water the earth, and make it bring forth and bud that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater, (11) so shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; it shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.” Isa.55:10-11 2. I am responsible to believe what God has said! “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.” Jn.8:56 “(6) just as Abraham ‘believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” Gal.3:6 3. But my responsibility is subject to divine sovereignty! “A man’s heart plans his way, but the LORD directs his steps.” Pr.16:9 “(8) For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, (9) not of works, lest anyone should boast.” Eph.2:8-9 4. God not only hates the sin but He hates the sinner! “The boastful shall not stand in Your sight; You hate all workers of iniquity.” Ps.5:5 “The LORD tests the righteous, but the wicked and the one who loves violence His soul hates.” Ps.11:5 5. But God loves sinners! “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” Jn.3:16 “As it is written, ‘Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated.” Rom.9:13 6. God gets all the glory in the salvation of a sinner! “…that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of Him who calls.” Rom.9:11b SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: All small groups will meet at the church on Wednesday evening, June 5, at 5:30 for supper and at 6 p.m. for Worldview training.
