Playing the Fool

In the second half of 2 Corinthians 11, Paul demonstrates one of the best examples of playing ‘the devil’s advocate’, as he attempts to highlight the flaws of his opponents in the Corinthians church. But even though it’s a somewhat entertaining read (and Paul has a lot of fun at their expense), we’re still reminded of the gospel weight of his argument. And the weight is emphasised as he doubles up on his foolishness, not only boasting like a fool, but boasting about suffering and weakness. So, while he’s attempting to reveal the flaws of his opponents, he’s actually flaunting his own failures for the sake of the gospel, building up to the climax of his argument in 2Co 12:9. And it’s an incredibly important reminder of the upside-down kingdom and the foolish gospel. It’s laughable, but life-changing.
