Since India and China are two of the fastest growing economies of the world, inevitable comparisons often occur. One such parameter is infrastructure. The linkage of a nation’s economy with the cement industry is immense. As India and China are developing economies, the contributions of the cement industry in terms of raw material requirements and creating employment opportunities is huge. China currently yields 60% of the cement produced globally while India is also moving rapidly in terms of improvement in the cement manufacturing process and production.

Public infrastructure, such as highways, roads, etc. in India mostly grew at a decent pace. However, it is also important to connect rural areas with the growing urban portion of the country in order to cover up the 6% gap between the urban and rural economic growth. The initiatives taken by the Chinese Government helped to boost infrastructural development.

The key differences and reasons for the gap between India and China in terms of cement are:

 • The singular approach of the Chinese government as discussed above.
 •

 • China encourages development and makes complementary policies whereas growth in India has many hiccups and bottlenecks in the way.
 •

 • India’s democratic system takes time to accept or implement global projects whereas the government in China takes fast and well planned decisions.

The development of Cement production process in India is picking up the pace and with organizations like Cement Manufacturers Associations (CMA), where the cement industry leaders get a platform to grow and discuss sustainable development, latest trends and research. The capacity utilisation of the industry is 59% and can be easily improved. It is the only industry in India that kept pace with the changing socio-economic trends and quickly adopted new technologies and environment sustaining methods.

The advantages of being a part of the CMA are huge. It provides a platform to its members to voice their opinions in front of the government of India and also global international leaders. They can express environmental concerns related to the cement industry on the platform. They can network and decide to benefit each other in the long run. They can seek legal opinions which apply to the complete industry. They can discuss the latest technologies related to the manufacturing of cement which can help the country to emerge as one of the key players of cement manufacturing around the globe.

In the long run, there is a huge possibility that we have a scope to achieve even greater feats in the cement domain. While the development in China attracts mid investors, our country will attract long term investors , that’ll help open new avenues for growth of the country’s economy and employment opportunities.
