Past, Present and Future Visualization in Civil Engineering with Austin Reed of HNTB

Almost everyone has already been into sports as a kid. But, as we grow older and find out the huge range of activities we can devote our time to, not all of us develop the exact same interest in athletics. Today’s guest, however, managed to keep his life-long love for sports, and integrated that with his passion for games and 3D visualization.

Austin Reed is a 3D visualization specialist at HNTB, a design firm in Kansas City, Missouri. A huge fan of the Kansas City Chiefs since he was a young boy, he actually got into the AEC industry because he wanted to create 3D models of football stadiums. He got his degree in computer animation for video games and film in 2002 and, after returning to Kansas, he discovered that Kansas City was actually “the mecca of sports architecture”, with five of the biggest companies in the country located there.

On today’s episode, Austin details his experience with the transition period between Render Farms and V-Ray to real-time 3D visualization, his team’s workflow, including their participation in the stadiums of the Las Vegas Raiders and the San Francisco 49rs, as well as the high-speed rail project in California, and his 3DS Max learning process, given that his education was based on Maya.

Austin and Sam also dive deeper into what the future of visualization may look like. Will everything be processed in the cloud, meaning that we won’t need to store some much data locally?
