Karyn Kusama has destroyed a lot of expectations throughout her filmography. One of which is the expectation that she is a one-note, predictable filmmaker. Destroyer is a good example of that. Coming from a neo-suspense-horror-drama-whatever else you want to label a neatly constructed film that cannot be finitely labeled like The Invitation, Destroyer is a doubling - or quintupling - down of one of Kusama most recognizable themes to her work: Empathy.
