Dedication Day the First Memorial Day

b'The first Dedication Day ceremony took place three years after the end of the Civil War. At that time the Commander and Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, John A. Logan gave a speech commemorating the service of his fallen comrades in arms. The service was followed by boys and girls of the Soldiers and Sailors home placing flowers on the graves of dead Confederate and Union soldiers. This observance continues today as Memorial Day. Thanks to all who have served this country valiantly and willingly. We honor you!'
