Before you sign a contract to do a brand deal or to join an MCN (YouTube network), there's a few legal terms you should understand before you sign away your channel or agree to a brand deal that may create a lot of headaches later. Most creators, being the more creative type of person, tend to focus on the creative side of brand deals and the benefits of joining a network, but if you don't understand all the fine print that goes along with making money in those avenues, you could be up for a lot of heartache, disappointments, or even a law suit. (Yes, lawsuits happen to YouTube creators.) So I sat down with a YouTube lawyer to discuss some of the common legal jargon and terms you'll probably read in your contracts and hear discussed. This is what the terms mean, what you should watch out for, and how to respond appropriately to these clauses.
