U.S. Navy says it\u2019s tracking UFOs

San Diego \u2013 Strange flying objects captured on video by Navy fighter pilots off the coast of San Diego in 2004 and in Atlantic waters in 2015 were acknowledged by the Navy as \u201cunidentified aerial phenomena\u201d last week, the first time the service has acknowledged the objects are real.

The three videos, published by former Blink-182 guitarist Tom DeLonge\u2019s \u201cTo the Stars Academy,\u201d appear to show small, airborne craft flying and maneuvering at high speeds. The videos were shot by the Advance Targeting Forward Looking Infrared pods on Navy F/A-18s.

A Navy spokesman told The Black Vault that the Navy had no \u201cdescriptions, hypothesis of conclusions\u201d about objects in the three videos. The videos are labeled on YouTube as \u201cFLIR1,\u201d \u201cGimbal\u201d and \u201cGo Fast.\u201d

The Navy also told The Black Vault the dates on which each video was shot. FLIR1 was shot by an F/A-18 Super Hornet assigned to the aircraft carrier Nimitz off the coast of San Diego on Nov. 14, 2004. The other two videos were shot on Jan. 15, 2015. On the \u201cGimbal\u201d video, one pilot says on the radio \u201cLook at that thing, dude.\u201d

One of the holy grails of modern science is to find a world, beyond Earth, with life on it.

Over the past few decades, astronomers have uncovered thousands of new exoplanets.

Today, we know of over 4,000 confirmed exoplanets, with more than 2,500 of those found in the Kepler data. These planets range in size from larger than Jupiter to smaller than Earth.

However, the idea that exoplanet K2-18b is rocky, Earth-like, and has liquid water is absurd, despite recent headlines.

Light filters through K2-18b's atmosphere when it passes in front of its star, enabling us to measure what's absorbed.

When a planet transits in front of its parent star, some of the light is not only blocked, but if an atmosphere is present, filters through it, creating absorption or emission lines that a sophisticated-enough observatory could detect. If there are organic molecules or large amounts of molecular oxygen, we might be able to find that, too.

One of the two teams that studied exoplanet K2-18b, which was discovered by Kepler's K2 mission, was able to extract a water signal from the transit data.

The red dwarf star, K2-18, is located 110 light-years away in the constellation of Leo. There is a planet orbiting in its habitable zone (K2-18b), where temperatures are expected to be between 0 and 40 Celsius (32 and 104 Fahrenheit), but the planet is more than twice the radius of Earth and more than eight times Earth's mass; it cannot be rocky.
