b"Improving the safety of the traveling public is our number one goal at TxDOT. Even though the numbers of people killed each year in traffic crashes in Texas has decreased by about 21 percent since 2003, there were still were on average 250 people killed every month in 2011. In order to bring this critical and important issue to the public's attention, in August of this year, TxDOT began displaying the year-to-date numbers of traffic deaths in Texas on more than 700 message signs each month in an attempt to remind drivers that once you get behind the wheel, you have to be ready for anything. For more, I spoke with Carol Rawson, director of TxDOT's Traffic Operations Division. This episode originally posted in October 2012."
