It was 12:18 pm on October 21, 2003 when Jennifer Chiba called 911. In a panicked voice. She told the 911 operator that her boyfriend Elliott Smith had tried to commit suicide by stabbing himself with a knife in his chest. He was rushed to the hospital but they were unable to save him. At 1:36 pm on October 21, 2003 singer/songwriter Elliott Smith passed away.
