Vermont's Long Trail is the oldest long trail in the United States.  It was the inspiration for the Appalachian Trail.  Stretching 272 rugged miles along the ridge of the Green Mountains, it runs from Vermont's northern border with Canada down to it's southern border with Massachusetts, and is contiguous with the Appalachian Trail for it's southern 100 miles.
