Second Variety - Part 1 (of 2)

Published: Dec. 9, 2020, 4 p.m.

We return, for this week's Tale, to the work of sci-fi giant Philip K. Dick.  First published in 1953 in Space Science Fiction, Dick transports us to a world where the Cold Ward had heated up - an apocalyptic war has broken out between the Soviet Union and the United Nations, and a near total Soviet victory has forced the North American government to flee to a Moon Base, leaving the majority of the troops behind.  The UN's solution to fight back - a new robot weapon, nicknamed 'claws.'
This, like much of Dick's work, is a Tale where technology has moved beyond a useful comfort to mankind and has the potential to become something harmful, and something we cannot fully understand...
