China is using its Belt and Road Initiative to forge ties with countries stretching from South East Asia to Europe. The initiative usually involves pouring billions of dollars into infrastructure, such as railways, ports, and power generation. But Chinese leader Xi Jinping is also mobilising religion to cement relations, especially with its neighbours.
