On Sunday, October 8th, 2017, Rev. Harding Cletus Coon, 94, was call home to his heavenly Father. He was born on July 20, 1923, in Surry County, the son of Cletus C. and Leatha Owens Coon. He devoted his life to spreading God’s word with his evangelist radio ministry every Sunday afternoon called “Amazing Grace” for over 30 years. He served as inter pastor of Willomore Baptist Church. He and his loving wife, Elora were active in many church activities. He always enjoyed yard sales, auctions, flea markets, and never turned down the chance to go salt water fishing. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend to many. He will be deeply missed. Rev. Coon was preceded in death by his loving wife of 66 years, Elora W. Coon in 2012 and two sisters and two brothers. Those left to cherish his memory are his two daughters; Judy Patrick of Asheboro, NC and Rebecca Melvin (Cliff) of Franklinville, NC; grandchildren; Dr. Brent Wilson, Zachary Melvin, Olivia Melvin Pitts (William), great grandchildren, Connor and Amelia. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 pm at Hanes Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, 2:00 pm at Hanes Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel with burial with full military honors at Guilford Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the Randolph Hospice House, 446 Vision Drive, Asheboro, NC 27204. We weren’t close as others, but I considered him a Pawpaw (that is Grandfather) figure, although he probably never knew it. He loved to preach, hear/let others and hear good old Gospel music. Back when I was a kid, not even saved yet, I came by ‘PET while he was on and I remember Brother Arvin saying, here he goes again, gettin’ all redfaced; LOL! Many probably don’t know, but he was on for a time, back in 1962, on the old WFRC, Reidsville and even filled in for at least one other preacher from Greensboro (Arthur Perkins), on his broadcast on the same station later, which ironically, came on right after his own, when he had it. Brother Coon let me borrow some old real-to-real tapes containing his last two broadcasts on ‘FRC and where he filled in for Brother Perkins as well. This particular broadcast, is his next-to-last broadcast of his own, from those. I know the songs, testimonies, announcements, strong message on the sinner's final home, worldliness and the refuge from both and just the look back in time, will be a blessing.
