An assurance that New Zealand is doing the right thing, by not cutting corners in approving a coronavirus vaccine.
The Government doesn't plan to use emergency provisions to fast-track vaccines, like the Pfizer Biontech vaccine that British regulators have approved for emergency use.
Medsafe will instead allow pharmaceutical companies to make rolling applications, updated as data comes in, to speed up the process.
College of GPs medical director Bryan Betty told Mike Hosking it's good that New Zealand officials will be doing their own checks on top of those done by foreign regulators.
"Occasionally things do get picked up during the process, and it should be able done quickly."
Betty says  while Medsafe isn't likely to pick up any issues that other regulators haven't, it's better to be safe than sorry.
He says it's a second barrier of safety, that should be able to be completed as soon as possible.
