HUD proposes smoking ban in public housing.

In this hour I take callers on a new proposal from HUD (Department of Housing and Urban Development) that would effectively ban smoking in all federally run public housing units. This would amount to approximately 1.2 million homes across the country.

Many callers are torn, saying that it's a right of the individual to smoke if they'd like, but also saying that the health of others shouldn't be put in jeopardy. Bottom line, if the government owns your house, they have the right to do with it as they please. HUD won't be moving forward with the proposal until they hear from the public on both sides of the argument.

Side note: More than 228,000 of the nation’s public housing units are already smoke-free.
