02/01/07: Doing the Bare Minimum

The Democratic Congress has had quite the busy week; this segment just scratches the surface. The Senate passed their version of the minimum wage hike; however, Senate Republicans, who decided that they only like the filibuster when they are in the minority, forced $8.2 billion in tax cuts into the bill, and even then, 10 GOP senators voted against it! This sets up a confrontation with the House, who passed a "clean" minimum wage bill. The Democrats also did the work of the last Congress by passing one of their unfinished spending bills, eliminating virtually all earmarks from the budget. The Democrats have talked the talk; now, they walk the walk.
