The original version of the song was released in 1960 and had a strong blues influence, after it was a local hit around Detroit. Berry Gordy decided that the song needed to be re-recorded to achieve wider marketing and commercial appeal. The second version reached number one on the Billboard R&B chart and number two on the Billboard hot 100 chart.
