President Bush's plan to add 20,000 new soldiers to those already serving means that he has found yet another way to package "stay the course."

At the same time, he keeps up his claim of "spreading democracy around the world." With guns and bombs and fear, that is.

Can a people who have been used to dictatorships and colonization accept the idea of democracy practically over night, when after nearly 231 years we haven't found the answer for our own country?

I look at all of this today, and relate a personal story about my growing up in a dictatorial household.
