Episode 37-How Much to Render Unto Caesar?

Published: Oct. 13, 2006, 7:14 p.m.

A recent New York Times article pointed out something that I already knew, but it cast it in a light that gave me pause for thought.

Clergy members who do not live in church-owned parsonages can declare all housing-related expenses as tax-exempt income.

The argument is that the charitable work that clergypeople do entitles them to the deduction, yet the person who directs the local Red Cross chapter or the local domestic violence shelter does not get the same thing.

Is it right for clergy to enjoy the services of government and not pay for them?

I'd love to get some opinions on this one...
