Like the Colossians, we live in a world of enticing but empty spiritual alternatives to the true knowledge of God as found in His Word. Nowadays, people - generally-speaking - are tired of doctrine - the preaching and teaching of the Word. On the one hand, we have those who are looking for a quick-fix. They don't want to be bothered with knowledge. They want some simple steps on how to live, discern the future, or get their needs met. On the other hand, we have the modern-day "gnostics" who are offering to an elite few - "superior knowledge" - outside of the Word of God - some kind of sensational manifestation, experience, or revelation. Let's get it straight - There is no higher knowledge than God's Word!
