He taught at Penn State since 1996. I was trained at Trinity College, Dublin (B.A., M. Litt.) and McMaster University, Canada (PhD). My main research interests lie in the field of Roman history and archaeology, on which I have published two monographs (Bathing in Public in the Roman World [Ann Arbor, 1999] and The Lure of the Arena [Cambridge, 2011]) I have edited or co-authored three other books, and have numerous scholarly articles and chapters in print. In addition, I am interested in the phenomenon of pseudoarchaeology and have published articles, organized conference panels, and edited a book studying the topic (Archaeological Fantasies[London, 2006]). I have appeared in the PBS science series Nova and on the History Channel, and have produced three courses with The Teaching Company, on the History of Ancient Rome, Emperors of Rome, and Great Battles'
