And so this week I'm going to talk to you about what it means to have the number one influencer in your life that can make a difference in where your life ends up. That's what this podcast is all about. Let's learn and grow together. Welcome to TGIF Today. God Is First. You don't know what you don't know. That's something I've learned years ago that has served me well, to realize I just don't know everything and I need to learn from other people. So today I want to tell you about the number one secret to being more successful in life and work. And this number one secret has served me well over my 40 years of walking with the Lord. And I know it will serve you well too. Before I get into today, I want to tell you that we've got a big announcement that I'm going to share a little bit later in the teaching today. And so I hope you'll stay around to, let me share that with you. I know it's going to be a blessing to you and it's going to help a lot of people. So what is that number one secret? Well, it's being mentored or coached by someone. You know, in my life, I've had two major mentors and when we look in the Bible, we see that there were mentors. Moses mentored Joshua, Elijah mentored Elijah, and Paul mentored Timothy. Those relationships were so important because they learn things that they would use later as leaders themselves. And it's so important that we learn from people who've gone before us who understand things that we don't understand, who know things that we don't know. I've learned over the years that wisdom is caught, not taught by hanging around my mentors. I learn things by being around them; they weren't always trying to teach me something, but they did so simply by their life and how they lived their life and conveyed it to me. One of my mentors is a man named Jim Mezick. He's known me since I was 13 years old. And, was very close to my family growing up. He was an assistant pastor at the church where I grew up in Columbia, South Carolina. And he later moved her to North Myrtle beach where he became a senior pastor there. And, it just so happened that when I finished college, I decided to move to North Myrtle beach to try to play professional golf. I wanted to raise money and go on the tour. And so I got into a lot of gambling. I wasn't a Christian yet at that time. And so I really got into a lot of bad stuff that led to me having a lot of disappointments and it looked like I was not going to achieve my goal of being on the professional golf tour. And God used that to draw me to himself. And he also used Jim to be the instrument of that drawing in addition to the prayers from my mother. And so Jim has stayed a good friend of mine for many years. He's now 84 years old. I was just with him last month in North Myrtle beach and we continue to talk every week and he's followed my ministry. He's participated in many of my conferences and he's even been my Jonathon, if you will. And so he spent a great mentor. He was the mentor for me when I was first being established as a believer, but he wasn't necessarily a marketplace mentor. Later on in my marketplace call that role went to Gunnar Olson. I met Gunnar Olson in 1996 and gunner became a dear friend and spiritual father to me in the marketplace. When he was the man who told me that I had a Joseph calling on my life, and so that was a huge Kairos moment in my life and gunner is now 83 years old and we still stay in touch. He lives in Sweden now. These two men, I would say, were responsible for where I am today in my spiritual journey. We all need to have mentors and coaches and I believe that you can never go wrong if you find the right coach or mentor in your life. These mentors must have some qualifications though. When you're looking for someone, they need to have life and work experience. They need to have compatible values that you have. They need to have been successful in their life, not necessarily monetarily all the time, but they need to be successful in life and calling because you want to learn from somebody who's been successful. They need to have had failure in their life because failure is important for us to learn wisdom and humility. And you want a mentor who's had that experience, who's had the failures, but they've learned from those failures and they've turned those failures into something that is successful. So keep these four things in mind as you think about a mentor in your life. Modern advertising founder, David Ogilvy of Ogilvy and Mather advertising, an international advertising agency. I read a lot of his books during my years as an ad agency owner. I share this story often, but I'm going to share it again because it's a powerful story on the value of a mentor or a coach. And so there was a man who wanted to seek David's advice about a business problem. He said, I'll gladly pay you if you'll just give me five minutes of your time. I feel that you could solve this problem for me easily. Ogilvy agreed to go have coffee with him and he listened to the problem and he responded with the answer. The man could not believe what he heard in five minutes. Ogilvy literally solved his problem and so the man asked him, well, how? “How much do I owe you, Mr Ogilvy?” He said, “$5,000.” Well, the man was livid. He said, “You're going to charge me $5,000 for something that took you five minutes to do?” Actually, sir said, Ogilvy it took me 25 years to be able to give you that answer. Such is the value of a mentor who's had the hard knots, who's had to pay for the lessons they've learned, who had the wisdom and insight to be able to steer you and give you advice and keep you from making poor decisions. You know, after my ad agency days, I did some consulting and I could get up to $2,000 a day for that consulting because I knew something that businesses and executives needed to know. I could save them a lot of money. I could save them a lot of heartache and it was worth that much money to them to pick my brain. Jeannie is from Malaysia. She's a professional business coach. She found me on the internet, she was reading TGF and she wondered if us could help her be a better coach. You see, she was a professional business coach herself. And so she, as she pondered this, she began to think, well, can I take the time to invest my time in a relationship with us? Can I afford the money to build, to hire us to be a coach? You know, in Malaysia, people there work very, very hard. They are the ultimate workaholics in Malaysia and Singapore. I've been to both those places several times. And so I could appreciate some of the thinking that Jeannie had. Well, she told me that what she was most impressed with was Os's ability to connect the scriptures to business and calling. That was what the determining factor for her hiring me as her coach. And so I want you to listen to some of the comments that Jeannie makes in this video and I think you'll appreciate the value that I was able to bring to her. “Hi, my name is Jeannie and I run a coaching company called Euro in Penang Malaysia. I have a team of coaches in the areas of business, leadership and life. So about maybe six months ago, I was looking for a coach to coach me, not only in the area of life, but I was looking for someone who would understand what it means to be a Christian in the marketplace. There's another form of coaching and mentoring and that's group coaching. Group coaching has some benefits because you hear the perspectives of others. You can apply to your own situation. You develop your friendships with the people in the group and the, you benefit personally from those relationships. You might meet somebody that might want to invest in your business, or you might meet somebody who has an expertise in an area that you need. Uh, you never know who's going to be in a group when you're involved in a group coaching. The other factor of group coaching is it's less expensive. You say, I can share with a group at a lower cost. Then one-to-one coaching and the value you get is great because you're still getting personal input at a much lower rate than what I would have to charge on a one to one coaching. Now over the years I've discovered 10 core areas that must be learned to have success in life and work. These 10 are areas have helped me realize the God given assignment in my own life to help others discover and fulfill their purpose in life.
