May 14, 1973

The United States launched Skylab One, its first human-crewed space station. It was the last launch of the Saturn five rocket and the largest payload ever launched into space at the time. Skylab will fall back into the Earth\\u2019s atmosphere in July of 1979.

Skylab was the first United States space station launched by NASA and occupied for about 24 weeks between May 1973 and February 1974. It was operated by three-astronaut crews, each with three members: Skylab 2, Skylab 3, and Skylab 4. The operations included an orbital workshop, a solar observatory, Earth observation, and hundreds of experiments.
