Handling Life’s Failures
Trouble At Home
June 4, 2017

Please turn in your Bibles to 2Samuel 12-18, Galatians 6:7-8

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive
us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” 1John 1:9

“What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2 By
no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?”
Romans 6:1-2

“Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8 Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.” Galatians 6:7-8

Consequences of forgiven sin vs. unforgiven sin

• Consequences of unforgiven sin penalties: judgment
• Consequences of forgiven sin discipline: God’s perfect work

Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as His children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? 8 If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. 9 Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live! 10 They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in His holiness. 11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. Hebrews 12:7-11

3-Fold aim of the God-sent consequences of forgiven sin:

1. To remind us of just how exceedingly evil sin is

2. To remind us that God doesn’t take sin lightly

3. To make sure we grow up to be mature and complete

Free vs. Costly

1. Grace is free, but it isn’t cheap

2. Sin is cheap, but it isn’t free

3. Free is in the sowing, but never in the reaping

What is God’s Spirit speaking into your life today? How must you respond?
