Charles Frode is a teacher trainer-mentor, and master teacher of English and Creative Writing for over 40 years. He has been formed by many life experiences— building Monterey County California’s first passive solar house; his archetypal experience in a Trappist monastery uncannily mirroring Hermann Hesse’s novel, Narcissus and Goldmund, and his ensuing memoir, I Am Goldmund: My Spiritual Odyssey With Narcissus; a degree in Religious Studies and Philosophy and a Master’s Degree in Educational Technology; a life of meditation, practice, and research in Christian mystics, Tibetan Buddhism, and Indian spiritual masters, along with the current research among lifetime Buddhist meditators and cognitive-neuroscientists; Print On Demand publication of 3 short story collections, his first collection of poetry, and a reflective book on Gardening; and his marriage with an Aztec princess whose Mexican family provides Frode with characters, places, and events that fill his historical fiction. Frode and his wife merged their two linguistically and culturally distinct families into a caring and welcoming family home where they parented four children and where clan and friends have gathered for three decades of cooking, food, conversation, drama, pain and suffering, parties, tequila, weeping, celebration, and love. Frode currently teaches English and Creative Writing to incarcerated high school students in Juvenile Corrections. He is bilingual and bi-literate in Spanish and English. He plays alt-rock-folk and flamenco guitar and blues harp in the duo, Macho Gaspacho. He is his wife’s sous-chef and his own cook and baker. They are lifetime gardening mates who both love to grow giant bamboo and fill their garden with perennials of color and splash.
