The Next Tsunami (Part 1)

Published: Sept. 19, 2005, midnight

b'The images of death and destruction from the Asian tsunami have given \\nway to unbelievably similar scenes coming from the Gulf Coast of the \\nUnited States in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. But the problem is far \\nfrom over in Asia.\\n\\nVeteran United Nations aid worker Trevor Page was called back into \\naction earlier this year to help restructure the tsunami relief \\noperation in Indonesia. The UN\\u2019s immediate response to the humanitarian \\nneeds in Aceh saved hundreds of thousands of people from starvation and \\ndisease.\\n\\nBut the UN World Food Programme wanted to move on from relief to \\nrehabilitation and reconstruction to help the displaced population get \\non with their lives. Illustrating his talk with slides, Trevor will \\nspeak about the operation in Aceh, how it was compounded by a major \\nearthquake on the island of Nias in North Sumatra, and the warnings from \\nthe world\\u2019s leading seismologists that another tsunami could devastate \\nthe coastline of West Sumatra at any time.\\n\\nSpeaker: Trevor Page worked for the United Nations for over 30 years. \\nMost of the time he was posted in various parts of Africa and Asia, but \\nhe also served at the headquarters of the World Food Programme where he \\nwas responsible for emergency humanitarian assistance worldwide.\\n\\n
