Immigration Issues (Part 1)

b'SACPA Thursday, November 17, 2005\\nImmigrant Settlement Experiences in Lethbridge\\n\\nIssues of settlement, as experienced by recent immigrants to Lethbridge, \\nwill be discussed at the November 17 session of the Southern Alberta \\nCouncil on Public Affairs.\\n\\nLately, immigrant populations are arriving in Lethbridge from the Sudan \\nand Afghanistan. Both groups embrace traditions and cultures that are \\nsignificantly different from those which are experienced here in \\nLethbridge and, as a result, the settlement process can pose challenges \\nand barriers to be overcome in order to achieve an eventual and active \\nfull participation in the Lethbridge community.\\n\\nSarah Amies, Program Director for Immigrant Services with Lethbridge \\nFamily Services, will present cultural profiles of the Sudan and \\nAfghanistan, describe the available, local settlement services and will \\ntalk about the challenges, barriers and successes experienced by the \\nimmigrant population in Lethbridge.\\n\\nSpeaker: Sarah Amies. Sarah Amies has lived, worked and raised a family \\nin Lethbridge since 1982. She graduated from the University of \\nLethbridge (\\u2019BA \\u2013 Distinction) in 1988. For the next 13 years, she \\nworked as the Applied Studies program coordinator and as an Arts and \\nScience Academic Advisor for the U of L.\\n\\nIn January 2001, Sarah started working with Lethbridge Family Services \\nas the Program Director for Immigrant Services department. In this \\ncapacity, Sarah is involved in community development and educational \\ninitiatives as well as overseeing the daily operations of the settlement \\noffice.
