Should Muslim Women strive for Equality or Justice?

  • •We all know, at the core of our belief is ‘submission to Allah’.
    • •The core aim of feminism is to gain equal rights with men.
    • •‘Equality’ is not the starting point for a Muslim. Rather the starting point is Allah’s justice which creates a balanced and tranquil society.
    • • This does not mean Islam aims at inequality, rather it doesn’t make this a ‘starting point’ when devising roles and responsibilities.
    • • The foundation upon which the Islamic system of law is built is the concept of justice. “We have already sent Our messengers with clear evidence and sent down with them the Scripture and the balance that the people may maintain [their affairs] in justice.” 57:25
    • • ‘Equality’ is used in the Qur’an, not as a starting point for law or an organising principle but in terms of accountability.
    • • We created you from male and female and made you into communities and tribes so that you may know one another. Verily, the noblest amongst you in the sight of God is the most pious” (Qur’an 49:13).
    • •The Qur’an clearly states that Allah does not discriminate between genders: “I will not lose sight of any who labours in My Way, whether male or female, you are of one another '' (Qur’an 3:195).
    • • Meaning Allah will judge us equally on the Day, based on our deeds.
