Episode 11-Fibroids: The Silent War

Published: May 10, 2018, 2 a.m.

I share my personal journey... living with fibroids. Before you judge someone, listen to my story. Tune in!

What are fibroids?
Fibroids are muscular tumors that grow in the wall of the uterus (womb). Another medical term for fibroids is leiomyoma or just "myoma". Fibroids are almost always benign (not cancerous). Fibroids can grow as a single tumor, or there can be many of them in the uterus. They can be as small as an apple seed or as big as a grapefruit. In unusual cases they can become very large.

Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is a procedure done by a radiologist. It blocks blood flow to fibroids in the uterus. (It is also called uterine artery embolization.) For women who are not planning a pregnancy in the future, UFE is a possible option in place of surgery for fibroids.

I had my procedure at the University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore, MD. Check with your doctor in your area to see if they offer this option in your area IF this what you are thinking about doing. Who knows, I may get it again.
