San Carlos is the gateway to a lot of cool California destinations - from adventurous mountain sides to glamorous beaches.  A GA pilot has the whole state as a playground.  Mari Barrato has spent the last few years venturing to some of California’s airport destinations, and we often invite her to SCFC to share what she's learned.

In this seminar, Mari Baratto will talk about flying GA into Palm Springs and San Diego.  Each offer some unique challenges.  The mountains around Palm Springs make planning the approach important to avoid winds and turbulence.  San Diego seems innocent enough except that there’s a number of military and Class B airspaces that need to be factored in.  Mari will discuss her basic approach to SoCal flying, which includes route selection, alternate considerations in case of weather, and hints on how to make this a memorable flying adventure.  Long cross-country flights allow the pilot to see as many sights as they can.  Mari will discuss how to sightsee over many of the iconic beaches of San Diego and to safely navigate the mountainous terrain over Palm Springs.
