Why EV Battery Swapping Ain't Dead

About ten years ago, the dearth of charging stations combined with the low range of the first generation EVs, spawned the idea of battery swapping - exchanging a discharged EV battery pack for a fresh, fully charged one.  The exchange would be quick and simple.  And at the time, it held real promise for those early adopters who wanted to get past long recharge times and range anxiety.  Today, improved range, falling battery prices and recharge cycle times have made battery swapping mostly obsolete.   In an ironic twist of fate, battery swapping might just be what the electric grid needs to even out demand as hundreds of thousands of EVs hit the road in the next few years.
