God's system of justice demands a perfect substitute for sinners in judgment to be forgiven.

Under the Old Covenant, a young goat or bull without blemish takes the place of sinners in judgment to procure forgiveness of sins.

But under the New Covenant, Jesus Christ took the place of sinners in judgment, procuring and securing eternal redemption and forgiveness of sins for us through His blood.
