8: What is the Being Mode of Existence? Part II - Being vs Appearing

Published: Sept. 29, 2020, 3:48 p.m.

In what both Sonya and Lacey feel is the crecendo of the ideas we're exploring in the Having and Being approaches to life, we discuss several ideas that are central to our passion for this topic, from Erich Fromm's Chapter 5 of To Have or To Be.  1. Being refers to the real in contrast to the falsified illusionary picture. 2.  Overt behavior being in drastic contrast to the reality of the forces that motivate a person.  3. How the conscious and unconscious play a role in #2, and confirm its truth. 4. The character structure of a person, their true behavioral motivation, constitutes a person's real being.  5. Increasing the being approach to life means increased insight into the reality of one's self, of others and the world around them. 6. The socioeconomic structure of any given society largely determines the mode of existence they are inclined to operate from.
