14: Building A Being-Mode Based Society - How We Get There Part 1: Sane Consumption

Published: Jan. 16, 2021, 5:44 p.m.

"We must put an end to the present situation where a healthy economy is only possible at the price of unhealthy human beings." This sums up the foundational message of episode 14. Fromm says in the final chapter of To Have or To Be that in order to shift to a society that is based around the Being Mode of Existence, we must change the values of what we measure as successful. At the current time, success equals sick human beings & the money flowing back and forth (through a certain subset of the population's hands) like a mighty river. In order to achieve the Being Mode of Existence on a larger scale, healthy human beings must become the first priority.   We discuss Fromm's presentation of the challenges we face in shifting to a Being-Mode Based Society, how difficult it is, but how it is still possible pending we put the brightest minds and thinkers up to the task. Fromm gave very concrete ideas to change the pace of consumption in our country, as it is a root of the having mode of existence. He calls the shift we need to make here a shift to 'Sane Consumption.' He says individuals need to be motivated to consume in a sane manner, and presents some ways we can advocate for that and see it become a reality as we work toward building a society that works for human beings first. Fromm's explorations of potential solutions to society's ills are present in our discussion and are, quite frankly, fascinating.  Sonya and Lacey also discuss some personal news, we introduce our first business partner with the podcast, and let you know of upcoming episodes we are excited about!
