Understanding the Words

Do you remember your first Bible? Maybe your family had a big Bible, in which the names of your family members were written. Or maybe your grandma or grandpa had an old worn-out Bible. Maybe you first encountered a Bible in a church or a hotel room, a library or a thrift store. Maybe you received one on a special occasion or from a good friend. Bibles often show up just when we need them. The Bible is the best-selling book of all time, but it wasn’t always so available. Before the printing press and widespread literacy, people could only hear the Scriptures by going to church. Sometimes, they could only hear the Bible in Latin, which further removed them from the wisdom of the Bible. Now, we can have the Holy Scriptures in our own hands – and even on our smartphones. The Bible is the foundation of our faith. Even the Ethiopian eunuch in the Bible account knew that. Philip was led to this man from Ethiopia by an angel. The man was sitting in his chariot, reading – and puzzling over – Isaiah. He knew that there was something about this book, about those words, that he needed to understand. We should behave similarly. We have the words. “The word of God is powerful,” Hebrews 4:12 says.  It’s dynamite! It’s our job to study, understand, and ask questions about them. As we grow in knowledge about God through His Word, we will want to share this knowledge with those around us, reaching the world for Christ.        This is Luis Palau.
