Limited Time

It is amazing how little in this life we have control over. Even if we follow Christ, we still often think we have control over what profession we go into, our choice of spouse, where we live, even what route we drive to work or school. To some extent, we do, right? But things happen that we don’t expect: car accidents, bad weather, mistakes. We can plan and plan and plan for next week, next month, or next year, but there are no guarantees. Comedian Eric Idle calls this the London bus philosophy of life: at any moment, you could have your life taken by a London bus. Or Portland bus, or whatever transportation wherever you are. This shouldn’t be a cause for fear. Instead, it is an invitation to remember that, as Eric Idle says, “You’re at the edge of your life at every moment.” The Bible says it a little differently: “you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.” Our time on this earth is fleeting. We never know how much of it we will have. So, let’s make the most of it. As Paul said, “to live is Christ and to die is gain.” We need to use our limited time here on earth to spread the joy of the Good News Gospel to others, so that they too will make the most of their time here and have hope in the next life.
