Consistent Behavior

Have you ever met someone and thought highly of them, only to witness them behave totally different on other occasions? We all know someone, or perhaps have been that person, to lead a double life. This was the standard for me, I’m ashamed to say, for many years, and I tell about it in my book, The Secret Life of a Fool. It can be easy to behave one way with our church friends—and another way with our friends who don’t yet know Jesus. The problem with this is that it leads unbelievers to ignore our claims of faith. Our character and integrity are what people see in us. It’s how many people may define us. So, inconsistency in our behavior can turn unbelievers off to what we claim about Jesus. Of course, we can never be perfect, and sometimes our mistakes allow us to showcase God’s amazing grace, but if we knowingly live a double life, or a life with very obvious sin, unbelievers will not take us seriously when we claim to have faith. Romans 13:14 in the Bible says, “But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.” This week, as you reach your world, I urge you to consider how people may be viewing your behavior. God delights in us, and he knows we aren’t perfect, but we should strive to live and love as He did, if we want to win people to Him. This is Andrew Palau.
