The Munoz Story: Intimacy After Betrayal with Clinton and Charity

Published: Dec. 30, 2020, 10 a.m.

Welcome to episode #36! In this week's episode, Matt and Braden continue talking with Marilyn Evans about the practical steps parents can take to protect their kids!

Lies In The Marriage Led To "D-Day"
Clinton told Charity that porn was a past struggle, when it was actually still present in his life, along with strip clubs and massage parlors. To help set us free, God will always bring our sins into the light if we don't repent of them ourselves. This is what happened with Clinton. Him and Charity call it 'D-Day,' or 'Discovery Day,' when referring to the day she found porn on his phone and confessions of massage parlors and strip clubs in their email. She confronted him with her findings and he broke down and confessed.

Infidelity Is An 'Our' Issue, Not A "Him" Problem
Clinton put in the work to start overcoming his lifelong addiction to various sexual outlets. Charity had to overcome denial to realize she had also picked up trauma and damaging responses to triggers. They each had to work on themselves after D-Day, but also learn to have grace for the other as their spouse was on their own journey. Expecting everything to get better soon after confession will lead to further disappointment. As long as both spouses are willing to work on themselves and have grace for the other, there is always hope that a marriage can be restored.

Openness Builds Intimacy
Intimacy is "into-me-you-see," so Clinton and Charity have developed boundaries and protective strategies in their marriage that keep them safe. They confess to each other when they cross those boundaries, but they also both have other people in their lives that are ready and waiting to help whenever called upon. The openness even after mistakes is part of rebuilding intimacy. Knowing the other has a support system they're in regular contact with helps rebuild the trust. There are many kinds of intimacy that every couple needs to learn and implement, whether recovering from betrayal or not.
