P.3. Path Out Of Porn: Healing In Community

Published: July 7, 2021, noon

Welcome to episode #64!

In this week's episode, Matt and Braden talk about why we need community in our lives and how to powerfully set up effective community in both 1-on-1 settings and group settings. This is a practical 'how-to' if you're looking for an added boost in your journey to freedom!

Community is a non-negotiable
We all want to be the person who can win battles on our own, but we aren't designed to live like that. We are designed for community and have to be humble enough to realize that it's seeking people out that we'll become the best version of ourselves.

Setting up accountability relationships
Ask your potential accountability partner certain questions to see if they're the fit that you're looking for. For example, you could ask these questions:
Do you have the time to chat once per week?
Are you porn-free?
Do you have the desire to help me?
Would you listen to some resources so we're on the same page for what effective accountability is?

When you ask these questions all at once, you give them a way out without making them feel awkward. If they agree to help you, set up a time to chat each week and ask when they won't be available so that you won't push their boundaries and create resentment.

What to look for in a group
There is power in groups! The transformation and freedom that's experienced is amazing when people get in groups and build relationships where they are growing intentionally together.

Powerful groups have a leader or facilitator who is free of sexual sin and pursuing the Lord, along with high-level training resources where you can do the work on your own throughout the week and then come back together to go deeper with the material.

Effective groups are an amazing asset in your life. Be aware of the excuses stopping you from joining a group and consider the freedom and rich relationships that they're keeping you from.
