129. Deconstructing Fantasies: Unfulfilled Desires

Published: Oct. 19, 2022, noon

Welcome to episode #129! Matt and Braden begin a two part discussion on deconstructing our fantasies, and why it is a key component in our healing journey away from porn and masturbation.

The link between porn and fantasy
When we are battling a porn addiction, we can lack self awareness and tend to focus on the surface behaviour (porn use) and we miss the roots of why we struggle with porn. Our fantasies can be a signal of deeper needs or desires that can drive our addiction and they can be linked to our past or areas of emotional wounding.

Key emotional needs
Fantasy can have a key emotional need that props it up, and when we identify what that emotion is our the wound that it may stem from, then we can build a greater self-awareness in our life. When we identify where the emotional need stems from, we can invite God into those areas and communicate what we have discovered with our accountability structures. This alleviates the hold that fantasy has on us since we can recognize that there is a God who can meet those needs.

Unfulfilled Desires
One of the biggest areas of fantasy is unfulfilled desires, and this is a very powerful motivator that can drive our fantasies. This can be traced to a lack in our life, whether it is from a past event, or a present reality that we are dissatisfied with. We go to fantasy out of these desires because of a deeper rooted need, and God can meet us in those needs and help us to address where they stem from.
