107. Freedom On The Other Side Of Apprehension: David's Story

Published: May 11, 2022, 10:30 a.m.

Welcome to episode #107!

In this episode, Matt and Braden talk with Pure Freedom Journey leader, David Mallett, as he shares about how he made the choice to get help with his battle with porn and masturbation, even though he was crippled with apprehension.

Blessing on the other side of awkward
It can be really hard to admit we have a problem with porn, but it is even harder to admit we have a problem to others. We have a wide range of reasons to avoid that, some of which can be shame or guilt, potential embarrassment, thinking we will be exposed, or pride. But when we make a choice to tell others as God leads us, then we are open to healing, instead of being closed off. God heals us in community, but when we avoid following His direction, we become more and more isolated. Even though it can feel really awkward, once we choose to get over that, we will start to move in a journey of freedom.

Admitting our justifications
Part of why we don't have community, is because we justify our own behavior to avoid being transparent with others. When we admit we are justifying ourselves, we can start to address the reasons and give them to God.

We have a purpose!
One of the beautiful ways that God works, is that as he heals us, our story helps and encourages others. When we are stuck in the midst of addiction and shame, we often lose purpose and become self-focused to the detriment of others. Our life and story matter, and even though it may seem dark now, God wants to bring freedom not only for us, but for others as well. How amazing could it be to see our life that once seemed bleak become a rallying cry for others!
