Moira Kelly – The Unsung Heroine Who’s Saving Lives Across Continents!

Published: Aug. 16, 2021, 5:13 a.m.

Over the years Moira Kelly has helped those less fortunate across the world, from her time with the inspirational Mother Theresa in Calcutta, to volunteering in soup kitchens in Johannesburg, nursing crack babies in The Bronx, working in refugee camps in Bosnia and so much more. Her desire to help others culminated in a self-funded program which arranged medical evacuations for children to Australia so they could have life saving operations. The stories of the children who came into Moira's care have captured the hearts of our nation. First, we met Ahmed and Emmanuel Kelly from Iraq who both overcame severe disabilities and multiple surgeries to live a better life thanks to Moira. Emmanuel, with a successful singing/songwriting career and Ahmed a record holding Paralympian swimmer who we will see compete in Tokyo.

We also fell in love with conjoined twins Trishna and Krishna from Bangladesh who are known all around the world for surviving a 38hr separation surgery. Moira has so much compassion and empathy and her lifetime of service has earned her an Order of Australia Medal plus a long list of other awards including a Prime Minister Award, ANZAC of the Year Award, a Victorian of the Year Award and many nominations for Australian of the Year. This is a Mother I have dreamed of speaking with. Dreams do come true. Moira updates us on how the twins are going now as teenagers and shares her parenting tips. It is my honour to bring Moira to Pure Grit.
